| Background | B’Lakkam was born on Orion as B’Jized Emark. However, that is a name that has been long buried. The Emark syndicate is an Orion Syndicate that has notoriety even amongst Orions, as the Emarks were rumored to have their fingers in everything, including other Syndicates. While nothing has ever been proven, the rumor persists as the Emark’s wealth increases and there does not seem to be an overwhelming amount of activity from the Emark’s house. The Emarks also specialize in kidnapping beings and selling all sorts of beings into slavery throughout the known universe. Being born male is not an enviable position on Orion. Males are seen as second class citizens to women, who run the government and syndicates. Therefore, while girls are given an extremely in-depth education about the known universe, its citizens, languages, cultures, thievery, skullduggery, weapons training, dancing, and the art of seduction. Males are taught to read, write, and depending on their aptitude, directed towards a trade, or directed to more demanding intellectual pursuits, usually under the guidance of a teacher who will become his owner after training is complete. After all, men cannot be allowed to break free from female pheromones and therefore domination. The problem with female Orion pheromones is that they can only entice men. It is a guarded secret that such pheromones have no effect on boys. Therefore, until puberty, boys are safe from being charmed. Similarly, girls do not have their pheromones have their vaunted effects occur until they reach puberty. B’Jized was tested early on to determine his aptitude. It was discovered that he was quite intelligent. Therefore, his mother, D’Nebrius, determined that he would get a proper education. He had the potential to be a Syndicate King or diplomat. Therefore, he would receive the same education as his sisters. The only thing he would not be taught would be dancing and the art of seduction. While B’Jized excelled in subjects like history, sociology, xenobiology, languages, disguise, and skullduggery, he struggled with self-defense, martial arts, and weapons. His mother would give him extra sessions in hope that he would improve, but his best days in the fighting arenas were barely acceptable as an Orion. Because B’Jized was given the highest levels of freedom for a boy, he often toured the treasury, cargo bay, and merchandise. For much of his youth, he thought nothing of the people or other races being sold as slaves. After all, if they were stupid enough to be caught, they likely deserved their fate. Yet, at some level, he could sympathize with some of them, for was he not trapped? What life was there for a boy in Orion society? When B’Jized was 11, he was perusing the new slave stock, when he saw something that he had never seen before. She was human, but her hair was so red that it could have been on fire. She was somewhat scrawny for a human, but her eyes were as blue as his. When he approached her, he asked, “Does it hurt? Your hair?” At first the human scuttled to the back of her cage and said nothing. However, when B’Jized did not leave and tilted his head, she finally answered, “No.” She then added cautiously, “Have you never seen anyone with red hair?” B’Jized explained that he was concerned that it was on fire, which caused her to laugh. She then said, “I guess we both don’t know much about the other. I thought all Orions were green.” He learned that her name was Lucy Flannery and she was from Alpha Centuri, and she was a year older than he was. The two struck up an unlikely friendship and for reasons that B’Jized could not comprehend, she was never sold. He did not think that anyone knew of their discussions, but they were conducted irregularly, often at night, where their whispers were less likely to become noticed. By the time that B’Jized was 12, he was the only person in his class. His last sister had been removed, so Lucky was his primary being for true conversation. Lucy seemed to be fed well and her scrawniness was long replaced with soft curves. Their conversations continued and now, B’Jized would occasionally sneak her out for a short walk or to play games. These days of frivolity were soon to end, however. Lucy could hear the start of the changes in B’Jized’s voice. He started to grow, almost on a daily basis. His appetite could not be sated. While B’Jized might intellectually understand what this could mean, she realized that she had become a distraction and he needed to vacate Orion quickly. At first she tried to scorn him, but he kept returning. As that tactic did not work, she told him the signs she observed and that she did not want him to become like those who captured her. He needed to leave. When B’Jized was convinced about his oncoming puberty, he agreed. He did not want to become a drone to be used all of his life. He wanted to be with someone because he enjoyed them, like Lucy. He tried to convince Lucy to run away with him, but Lucy told him that would only lead to his being caught easier. He had to go alone. The decision tore at B’Jized, but it was the only solution. He would have to find Lucy later. So, when the next trade ship came, he smuggled himself on board and left Orion forever. Eventually the ship landed on a Betelgeusian colony and he disembarked for his new life on the run. However, B’Jized had not taken the foresight of bringing anything more than a handful of coins and had no idea how he would survive outside his posh Syndicate. He came to a building that he later learned was a religious holy ground. Once there, he approached the Betelgeusians, they inquired why he was here. Hastily, B’Jized explained that his parents were killed in space. He escaped and had been hopping on ship to ship just to survive. When they asked his name, he picked the first name that popped into his head: B’Lakkam. The Betelgeusians seemed to weigh this information and finally informed him that he could stay with them if he answered a simple question to their satisfaction. The question was which hero did he follow: Altaa, the Warrior; Cordban, the Trickster; Doban, the Ruler; F'ter, the Clock-Maker; Ost, the Vagabond; Lahile, the Mother; or Slichez, the Thinker. B’Jized weighed the options. While Cordban, the Trickster seemed more like who he grew up as, Slichez, the Thinker also appealed to him. As a Trickster might be frowned upon in this new society, he wisely selected Slichez, the Thinker. With a cheer and relieved sighs, the Betelgeusians took it as a sign that B’Lakkam was meant to be here and he was to be known as B’Lakkam Slichez for his new life. He was assigned to his adoptive parents who had lost their own child only a few months prior to his arrival. While, for his first few months on the colony, B’Lakkam got strange looks, they soon passed as he learned their language and studied their teachings. He also learned that only criminals selected Cordban to follow but those who followed Cordban also pretended to follow another. Had he selected Cordban, he could have been killed or at best turned away. However, he eventually would study from both teachings. From Cordban, he learned more on how to disguise himself and advance his personal career. From Slichez, he learned how to think deeply and carefully consider all potential outcomes before making a decision. Unfortunately, by being on this colony, he had little to no chance of searching for Lucy. His teachings from Silchez taught him that patience was required. The opportunity would come. His compassion for Lucy and the Betelgeusians caused him to seek a carrier in psychology. Eventually, he would enroll in the Betelgeusian Institute for Psychological Sciences and then do his residency at the Silchez Psychological Hospital. While all of this training furthered his career, it was not taking him away. So, with the goal of finding Lucy, B’Lakkam decided to enroll himself in Starfleet Academy. There he mingled with numerous races and enjoyed the diversity amongst them. He developed a reputation for being good at cards and gambling games (It never hurt that he knew when to load the dice or stack the deck). He excelled at the Academy and graduated in the top 20% of his class. He was more surprised to find out that amongst Starfleet Cadets, his old weapons and marital arts training made him slightly above average in Starfleet. However, in his psychological records, there is a notation that there appears to be something that he is hiding but from all studies, it is not dangerous to the Federation. |
